Candy pink ice cream looks far less menacing than the crinkled mess of a Carolina Reaper pepper, but in Scotland’s Aldwych Cafe and Ice Cream Parlor, this pink dessert is a honey trap.
Made with the world’s hottest peppers, the rosy frozen treat looks almost too good not to taste. A part of you wonders, “It can’t be that bad, it’s just ice cream.” So you put in your order, not realizing that in a few moments a spoonful of this spicy ice cream will make a daredevil out of you.
But things get weird and you get a little suspicious. A lady asks you to sign a waiver, and when she scoops the ice cream labeled “Respiro del Diavolo,” you notice it’s not quite strawberry or red velvet-colored. A voice in the back of your head tells you to Google translate the name, but you don’t because this is Glasgow and you’re about to try what is basically Scottish ice cream!
You find a nice spot by the window and take your first spoonful of the “Devil’s Breath,” which your friend has just translated for you, but it’s too late.
1.5 million Scoville units hit the back of your throat and you wonder, as every pore and opening in your face begins to sweat and leak.
At Aldwych Cafe, they’re serving a special Valentine’s Day ice cream flavor made with Carolina Reapers, an ice cream so hot that you have to be over the age of 18 and sign a waiver acknowledging the “risk of personal injury, illness, and possible loss of life.”
A U.K. vlogger went through a similar experience mentioned above but was fully aware of what could happen. Maybe it was the call of the wild or maybe it was ego, but he figured it couldn’t be that bad; he didn’t get through the whole bowl.
$2.69 per scoop is a small fee to pay for the right to say “I did that once.” So, if you find yourself with a date in Scotland between now and Valentine’s Day, show them just how much of a daredevil you are.
