McDonald’s New Milkshake Straw Is Kinda A Big Deal

When we think of McDonald’s, we tend to think of it in the same way we think of our childhood best friend. The fast food chain occasionally comes out with something new, and certainly is evolving throughout the years, but it will always have a place in our hearts.

In other words, it’s a classic — not necessarily the place we go for innovation and zest, but something we return to when we need comfort and reliability.

However, the fast food chain has just gone and totally changed up its game!

According to a press release, McDonald’s has designed a brand spanking new straw for its new dual-layer Chocolate Shamrock Shakes, and apparently it is totally wild.

The new straw is the brainchild of engineering firms NK Labs and JACE.design.

And it’s name? Is “STRAW.”

Yup. STRAW.

“It was a puzzling assignment but one with an ambitious goal,” says Seth Newburg, principal engineer and managing partner at NK Labs, in the press release. “From a physics perspective, it’s actually quite difficult to deliver a proportional amount of both chocolate and mint flavors with each sip. But that’s exactly what we did. It’s a marvel of fluid dynamics. Thanks Fibonacci sequence.”

Look, we get it: it’s just a straw. What’s all the fuss really about? Why all the hype. And luckily, the senior director of menu innovation at McDonald’s, Darci Forrest, can speak to that:

“We’re always listening to what our customers want and reinventing our menu in response,” Forrest said in the press release. “And though it might sound silly to some, putting our guests first sometimes means re-thinking even the humble straw. We reached out to some of the brightest engineers in the country and asked for their help to create the ultimate shake-drinking experience.”

When she puts it that way, we’re pretty convinced … only 2,000 of the unique STRAW designs actually were produced, and we’re sitting here wishing we had one to drink a milkshake with right now.

Way to go McDonald’s innovators and marketing team!

Say Hello To McDonald’s Chocolate Shamrock Shake

When you hear about a “secret menu,” do you know what it means? The secret menu is made up of items that aren’t available on an actual menu, but are created in our heads and specially requested upon ordering. One such item was the Chocolate Shamrock Shake, in which the bottom of the shake is chocolate and the top is mint.

According to Brand Eating, McDonald’s has decided to take this secret menu item and create a whole line of actual menu items, mixing the shamrock mint flavor with classic chocolate drinks, like the frappe, hot chocolate and mocha drinks.

The fast-food chain is adding five new seasonal drinks to their menu at participating locations, so those of us who weren’t in on the secret can finally partake. Check your nearest McDonald’s to see if the drinks are available, but even if they aren’t, you can probably make a secret menu request. The drinks are as follows:

Classic Shamrock Shake — The Shamrock Shake we’ve all come to know and love already, but this time with added green sprinkles on top for a more glitzy look.

Chocolate Shamrock Shake — Chocolate on the bottom and mint on the top, for a minty chocolate treat with a chocolate syrup drizzle to top it off.

Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe — The mocha frappe blended with Shamrock Shake mint syrup and topped with whipped topping and chocolate drizzle for a nice peppermint mocha vibe.

Shamrock Hot Chocolate — Steamed milk, chocolate syrup and Shamrock Shake syrup. Basically, mint hot chocolate.

Shamrock Mocha — Chocolate syrup, espresso and steamed milk with Shamrock Shake syrup. Think Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe, only the hot version to warm you up.

Since we aren’t sure at exactly which locations these new drinks are available, you can always try making your own Shamrock Shake at home. Popsugar has a pretty convincing recipe. Just blend 2 cups of vanilla bean ice cream, 1/4 cup of half-and-half, 5 drops of peppermint extract, and green food coloring for about 30 seconds. Add chocolate syrup to make it like the Chocolate Shamrock shake and top it with whipped cream, sugar crystals and a cherry for the full effect. Voila! That should hold you over until your McDonald’s picks up the Shamrock drink line.
