Starbucks Unveils 13 Red Holiday Cups

It’s the most magical time of the year — the holiday season.

Ever since 1997, the coffee chain Starbucks has debuted a new holiday cup to usher in the festive season each year, and fans have come to associate seasonal drinks and deals with the unveiling of the new design.

For this first time ever this year, other than soliciting an outside designer to decide what pattern graces the cups, Starbucks red holiday cups will actually feature designs that were created by customers — 13 customers, in fact.

Starting on Nov. 10, you can slurp happily on your pumpkin spice latte from a cup designed, quite possibly, by the fellow caffeine-addict standing next to you in line.

“We hope that this year’s red holiday cup designs express the shared spirit of the holidays as told by our customers,” Sharon Rothstein, Starbucks global chief marketing officer, said in a press release on the Starbucks website.

Starbucks received 1,200 design submissions from 13 different countries for the holiday cup, many of which can now be viewed in an online cup collection; the Starbucks Creative team was quick to notice, however, that there seemed to be specific themes that linked many of the submissions together.

“We loved how the red cups with white designs naturally created a collection,” Dena Blevins, the creative director at Starbucks Global Creative Studio, said in the press release. “They hang together as one idea, but each expression is unique.”

Ultimately, the 13 winning designs came from contestants living in six different countries, and they will be served in more than 25,000 Starbucks stores in 75 countries.

“People will be walking around the street in Shanghai, New York and London carrying these cups,” Blevins said. “We love that this year our customers’ artistry can play a part in brightening someone’s day.”

What’s more, is that according to Brand Eating, Starbucks is kicking off the holiday drink season not only with the festive cups, but with a special offer: There is a buy one, get one free deal on this year’s holiday drinks from Nov. 10 through Nov. 14, 2016. Go get your drink on (the holiday beverage selection includes the Caramel Brulee Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte, Eggnog Latte, Gingerbread Latte, Peppermint Mocha and the new Spiced Sweet Cream Cold Brew Coffee) with a loved one.
