Pregnant Woman Demeaned At Subway: ‘This Is Fast Food, Not Fine Dining’ (Video)

A pregnant woman was belittled by a Subway employee for a seemingly simple request when ordering her meal.

“I’m expecting, and doctors recommend that you don’t eat deli meat unless it’s thoroughly heated,” said mother Kassidy Small, who is 30 weeks pregnant with her second child. “Usually when I eat at Subway I ask them to microwave my meat and then toast it.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, deli meat must be heated to 165 degrees in order to avoid the bacteria risk in pregnant women, as reported by WHO-TV News.

On April 9, she went to a Subway restaurant in Adel, Iowa. As recalled on her Facebook page, Small said she asked the employee to microwave the meat for her foot-long ham sandwich. He ignored her request, even after she explained she was pregnant.

“I was a little bit in shock and was just going to let him get away with it because I am non-confrontational,” she wrote.

However, the woman behind Small in line was appalled at the exchange and demanded that the employee remake her sandwich.

“The man, getting frustrated with the lady’s requests for him to make me a new sandwich, completely snapped!” Small recalled. “He said that there are 20 people in line and he has already made 90 sandwiches today. He then said ‘THIS IS FAST FOOD, NOT FINE DINING!’”

The employee used a thermometer to prove the meat was hot enough. It was 140 degrees.

“I was in tears and that’s embarrassing in public,” Small told WHO-TV. “It’s easy for a pregnant woman to cry but I was also upset because of what just happened,” Small said.

Small and the woman left the store without food. They went to a gas station to get a sandwich, and upon hearing the story, the establishment paid for Small’s food.

According to Subway restaurant manager Jan Gute, a retraining effort for the restaurant has been established following the incident. It is uncertain whether the involved employee will be fired.
