Would You Eat The World’s Most Expensive Popcorn? It’s Covered With Gold (Video)

Berco’s Popcorn, located in Chicago, is known for its world-famous, delicious popcorn. Berco’s flavors include some that we already know — like butter and caramel — and some that are new to many of us, like white truffle and gold.

Wait, gold is a flavor? If you’ve ever wondered what edible gold tastes like, you can actually find it in some markets. To be honest, I’ve never wondered, since metal isn’t exactly a taste I crave. However, according to Bon Appetit, edible gold is flavorless, odorless and non-toxic. It can be found in pure 24-karat, or in mixes with silver. As long as you check the ingredients and make sure it’s edible — as in, there’s no brass or copper in there, it’s safe to eat.

So, Berco’s makes gold-flavored popcorn (video below). Except, since gold isn’t actually a flavor per se, it’s more a luxurious garnish for popcorn made from some rare and expensive ingredients. Other ingredients include: salt called Laeso, the most expensive salt in the world (from an island of the same name in Denmark), organic sugar for the caramel and Nielsen Massey Bourbon Vanilla.

I would imagine this popcorn tastes like vanilla and caramel. Maybe like a slab of salted caramel cake? Now that, I could try.

According to The Most Expensive Journal, the golden garnish consists of 23-karat edible gold dust, and is the final ingredient in the recipe. Overall, one kernel costs $5, and larger portions range from $100 for a quart to $1,000 for six and a half gallons. How much popcorn is too much, really?

If you want to try just one bite, you can do so for $5, and if you want to try one of their other, much more affordable and familiar varieties, you can do so for around $6. On the other hand, if you want to try something new and different, but don’t want to spend $100 on a bag of popcorn, you can always try the Way Too Expensive White Truffle for only $32. That sounds pretty compared to the Billion Dollar gold flavor.

Tune in to the video below to learn more about how it tastes!
