Looking for something new to freshen up your morning breakfast menu? The Monte Cristo is an underrated, hidden gem. It’s a glorified ham and cheese sandwich that will have you day-dreaming all week. Between the thick slices of your favorite ham, tasty gruyere cheese, you just can’t go wrong. You’ve got to give this a try!

If you have time to make french toast in the morning, you have time for a Monte Cristo! First, beat 2 eggs in a bowl that’s big enough to dip a sandwich. Toss in a couple pinches of salt and pepper and mix with the eggs. Then, throw together your sandwiches with a couple slices of thick-sliced ham, ½ ounce of shredded gruyere cheese, and a tablespoon of mustard and mayo for each sandwich. Be sure that whatever bread you choose is sturdy and can hold up to the weight of all the tasty toppings! You can add a little extra salt and pepper to taste.  Push down on the sandwich to compress it and smoosh together all the ingredients. Melt two tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, coating both sides, and then place into the skillet. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side until it turns a golden, crispy brown. That’s all there is to it! You can add a little sweetness to the dish by adding some fruit preserves and a light dusting of powdered sugar. Try this out and your friends will be begging you to host brunch!
