Maybe you go out for a coffee run with friends and stop by Starbucks before grabbing lunch at a local sushi restaurant. Not so bad, nothing unusual there. Now, maybe the following week, you go out for a coffee run to Starbucks and while you’re there you pick up some sushi. Only this isn’t just sushi — it’s a sushi burrito!
Starbucks is chasing this current food trend, which originated on the West Coast but has been making waves all over the U.S. this past year. What started with two guys in a San Francisco restaurant called Sushiritto, has now expanded in size and chains due to growing popularity.
Sushiritto can now be found throughout the Bay Area. The restaurant’s sushi burritos are made with traditional Japanese ingredients but, of course, come in “grande”-sized proportions.
Always quick in adapting to trends, Starbucks has come out with its own version of the sushi burrito (which, by the way, does not contain raw fish). Actually called the Chicken Maki Roll, this sushi burrito will probably be a new favorite lunch item!
Starbucks’ burrito is filled with the usual innards of a sushi-style burrito: shredded chicken, cucumber, pickled cabbage, onions, and avocado with tomatillo salsa and lime crema. Plus it’s covered in sushi rice paper and of course wrapped in nori (Japanese edible seaweed). The popular coffee chain usually stocks their fridge with on-the-go lunch items, which makes the sushi burrito the perfect addition.
And along with the Chicken Maki Roll, other new lunch items are set to appear in Starbucks’ new Mercato line, including: Crispy Grilled Cheese Sandwich, Organic Tomato Soup and Chocolate Pot de Creme.
So, that leaves only one question: Would you try a Starbucks sushi burrito?
