Why You Should Care About National Donut Day
By Cooking Panda
It’s National Donut Day, y’all!
We know that there are a ton of food holidays out there, but we have two great reasons to go all out celebrating this one – not only is there a rich and meaningful history surrounding the day, but you can also totally score free stuff. It’s truly a win-win situation.
You might be interested to learn that National Donut Day actually has a really cool history! The holiday goes back to World War I when the Salvation Army’s female volunteers would cook up donuts and hand out the sweet treats to American GIs overseas. This carried on through the Great Depression, and a Chicago Salvation Army declared National Doughnut Day in 1938 in order to raise a little extra money.
The “dough girls” or “dough lassies” continued the tradition during World War II.
During the Vietnam War, POW Orson Swindle even convinced his prison guards to serve sticky buns on November 10, which he convinced them was National Doughnut Day, a big holiday in America. This man was already a hero, but he totally leveled up that day.
So in a way, observing Donut Day is paying homage to our nation’s military history.
If that’s not enough to get you excited, there are tons of free donut deals. Most notably, Dunkin Donuts is giving out a free donut when you buy a drink, and at Krispy Kreme literally all you have to do is show up for a free donut.
If you’re in Australia, WE HAVE BIG NEWS: Krispy Kreme just released a thing of beauty called a “Big Apple Pie Donut” that legitimately looks like an actual pie. Check it out:
The lattice “crust” is made of white chocolate and cookie crumbs, while the rest of the donut is a standard one with apple pie filling inside. This is part of their American Classics line, which also includes the Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Campfire S’mores, and Coconut Cream Pie. We are super jealous! If you’re Down Under, give these donuts a try for us and report back.
If you can’t get your hands on those, but want something new, you must try these Glazed Donut Crunchkins:
These bite-sized candy poppers also come in Birthday Cake and Fudge Brownie flavors, and they are totally delicious, with a creamy outside coating and a light, crunchy center. If you’ve tried these, let us know what you think!donuts, doughnuts, food holiday, free donuts, National Donut Day
