What Happens When You Mix Coke And Liquid Nitrogen? (Video)

You know what happens when you mix mints with Diet Coke? Well, mixing Coke and liquid nitrogen is kind of like that.

As you’ll see for yourself in the video below, you can create a pretty great explosion with liquid nitrogen and Coca-Cola. The man in the video, only known as “Crazy Russian Hacker,” has a fun time showing us exactly what happens, and he does so more than once.

First, you’ll see that he keeps a vat of liquid nitrogen sitting off to his side, for this very occasion no doubt. Then you’ll notice that he not only tries the experiment of adding the nitrogen to the cola twice, but then tries it again with water. Now, what was it that made mints explode in Diet Coke? Something about the sugar content … or something?

Well, whatever it was, that’s not what’s going on here. The reason we know this is because you can get the exact same explosion using just water. Add some liquid nitrogen to a bottle of water once you run out of Coke (from exploding it all away in rocket form, of course) and get another rocket from it! I’ll be honest, I didn’t think it was going to work this time.

During each attempt, the “rocket” flies up over our Hacker and behind him and out of sight. I believe there was one that even went so high and so far that it soared over the garage (or shed, or whatever that building was behind him). The solution also spills all over the concrete and the host’s pants, which means this experiment is not for everyone.

Don’t try it if you’re not willing to get a little messy, and definitely don’t do it without a helmet like our Russian Hacker friend has. He’s prepared. Probably the best thing you can do is play pranks with it … Not that I’m encouraging that … just making an observation.

Check it out first-hand in the video below!
