Hie moved around a lot when she was a kid, but she didn't know how much travel would become a part of her life until 2009, when she moved to Singapore by herself. She did not know anyone there and quickly became a much more adventurous person than she had been before. That's when the travel bug hit.

"Thanks to Singapore’s strategic location I was able to travel to nearby Asian [countries] in a timely manner and cost-effectively," she writes on Girl Eat World. "After a short trip to Thailand in 2010 I discovered my love for being on the road and that it doesn’t have to be expensive to travel. The year after that, I went to Europe for the first time… and the rest is history."

During that first Europe trip, she was at the Coliseum in Rome with a friend and wanted a picture. But, she said, she was too busy eating a sandwich and didn't want to stop.

"The resulting pic was a funny one of me pigging out in front of an iconic background," Hie writes.

That was the beginning of "Girl Eat World." But during her second backpacking trip to Europe, which she embarked on alone, she wanted pictures but realized that she didn't want to keep asking strangers to take pictures of her, and she didn't want to take selfies either.

"I AM always eating so I took pictures of food at whatever memorable site I was in," Hie explains. "Then I posted these pictures to my personal Facebook where I received positive feedback from friends so I kept on taking one at every city I visited, for my own personal amusement. "

Eventually, a friend convinced her to create an Instagram page just for her traveling food pictures, and thus, "Girl Eat World" was born.

Now, she pushes herself to visit at least one new place every year and makes sure to enjoy all the local food, snapping shots of it in the most scenic spots on Earth.
