This Beer May Be The Perfect Post-Workout Drink

We tell anyone who will listen that beer is a healthy choice.

Maybe that’s a little bit of a stretch, since there isn’t a ton of actual science backing up the health benefits of the calorically dense beverage, but if you’re the kind of person who drinks a few beers on a Friday night and calls it dinner, you may appreciate what one Boston brewery has been up to.

Introducing the world’s first protein craft beer, from Mighty Squirrel Brewing:

The unique beer is infused with about 4 grams of protein, so we’re pretty sure it’s the perfect post-workout recovery drink. (But don’t quote us on that.)

“We loved playing tennis with friends and enjoying celebratory beers afterwards, but we wanted a brew that would fit in better at the finish line,” co-founder Henry Manice told BostInno.

In 2015, there were two different kinds of the protein beer: Mighty Squirrel Original, a bready Vienna lager with notes of caramel and citrus; and Mighty Squirrel Light, a crisp lager with honey and citrus notes. Each bottle has 5 grams of protein.

The beer doesn’t have a permanent home yet, but Mighty Squirrel is currently brewing a few other beers, including an India Pale Ale, an India Pale Lager and a Bohemian Pilsner, at von Trapp Brewery in Stowe, Vermont. The company has also raised over $4 million so far.

“Our craft beers have received very positive feedback from the active, social and health-conscious consumers in the Massachusetts market, and we can’t wait to take our Squirrel to other northeastern states in 2017,” co-founder Naveen Pawar told BostInno.

Pawar added that they are hoping to expand distribution to New Hampshire and Rhode Island soon, and if they get enough funds, they’ll finally get their own brewery space.

Your average bottle of beer has only 1-2 grams of protein, but some experts say it’s the perfect recovery drink. Researchers at the University of California, Davis, say that moderate beer consumption is great after a workout because it contains a good amount of nutrients and antioxidants, as well as some protein, fiber and silcon, which helps prevent osteoporosis, notes Vine Pair. The magical drink also helps with muscle upkeep and (obviously) reduces stress. Good enough for us.
