The Mexican Border Wall Might Cost You Your Health

Allow us to share some news that is sure to infuriate every avocado-loving American out there (and we know there are many of you — we have the Instagram photos to prove it).
If nothing else about our country’s rapidly changing policies is concerning to you, perhaps this will rattle you into a political consciousness: You might have heard about our new president’s plan to build a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
You might have also heard our president assure us that as American taxpayers, we won’t have to chip in to get this wall built.
Per Munchies, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer told Bloomberg just how this was all going down: “When you look at the plan that’s taking shape now, using comprehensive tax reform as a means to tax imports from countries that we have a trade deficit from, like Mexico, if you tax that $50 billion at 20 percent of imports … By doing that we can do $10 billion a year and easily pay for the wall just through that mechanism alone.”
Unfortunately, Munchies breaks this down: A 20 percent tariff on Mexican imports actually means that Mexican imports in America are about to cost a lot more than they do now.
A typical avocado imported from Mexico might cost about $1.10 at a supermarket for now, but soon it might go all the way up to $1.32.
That $14 you shell over for your avocado toast at brunch isn’t going to stay at that already high price for long, people. It may go up even higher!
Per Munchies, the USDA says that Mexico exported about $21 billion worth of food and beverages to America — in 2015. In just one year.
If you are somebody who enjoys a large variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet every season, you’re able to enjoy that produce largely because America imports so much from other countries.
