The Easy Way To Clean Your Microwave

If your microwave is still full of prehistoric crud from that time you forgot to cover your tomato soup and it exploded, you’ll want to read this.

Cleaning a microwave is no easy task. If just thinking about scouring away at the dehydrated concrete caked at awkward angles exhausts you, you’ll be relieved to know there is a simple way to clean your microwave in a flash. Have no fear — all you need is a lemon, a bowl, and about five minutes.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Fill a microwave safe bowl or glass halfway with water.

2. Grab a lemon. Cut it in half and squeeze the juice out into the same bowl. Go ahead and throw the two juiced lemon halves in the bowl when you’re done.

If you don’t want to use a lemon, or if your microwave has picked up some particularly offensive smells, we recommend swapping out the citrus for a couple tablespoons of white vinegar — it works like a charm to eliminate odors. Use this method minus the scrub down any time your microwave experiences a smell-related tragedy.

3. Microwave the bowl for five minutes. The hot liquid will steam the walls to break down and soften the solidified food.

4. Once those five minutes are up, all you have to do is remove the bowl and grab a dampened microfiber cloth — a dish towel, sponge or paper towel should work just fine too. If your microwave is full of grease, you’ll want to start with paper towels though.

That’s it! If there are any stubborn stains left, you can either scrub them with the rough side of a sponge or steam the lemon mixture one more time to try and loosen anything left.

Once you’re done, you can dip your cloth into the warm liquid and clean the outside of the microwave too — it works great on the buttons and dials. You can even use it to clean the bottom of your microwave — you’d be surprised what you can find under there.
