Say Hola To Starbucks’ New Mermaid Frappuccino (Photo)
By Cooking Panda
In the past several months, Starbucks has released a neverending line of super colorful, bordering on garish, beverages to celebrate holidays (Snowball Frapp), trendy flavors (Horchata Frapp) and mythical creatures (Unicorn Frapp). And now, to add to the eclectic mix: The Mermaid Frappucino.
Pump the brakes before you start rushing to the nearest Starbucks drive-thru (unless you already have plane tickets to Cabo or Cancun, keep on driving). Starbucks Mexico is set to release the Mermaid Frapp sometime this month, and it will be available at 600 locations for only one week.
Creature or coffee beverage, mermaids will remain a rare sighting in the States (for now). As if to rub it in, Starbucks Mexico tweeted: (translation) “It’s here! Today we can share my favorite drink together: Mermaid Frappuccino. #MermaidSeason.”

The limited-time-only Mermaid Frappuccino features a charming pastel green melon base, topped with blue vanilla whipped cream, iridescent pink (edible) pearls and a magical flourish of pink and purple sugar crystals. It’s dazzling; it’s Instagram-worthy; and it’s edible! Starbucks is slowly transforming coffee-making into a flashy art form.
In a press release, Starbucks touted the genius behind the mermaid-inspired coffee drink, saying it captures “the fantastical characteristics and classic elements of these creatures.” The cream base, made with melon and a dash of “magical flavor from the sea,” is “not available in Starbucks stores in the U.S.”
Although this limited edition drink is unavailable to us here, there’s still hope for other highly Instagrammable drinks to come stateside. Former Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz said in a statement: “Just stay tuned, because we have a lot more coming.” Kevin Johnson, current CEO, confirmed: “We will bring at least one new entirely new drink into Happy Hour this year that is going to be as good as Unicorn or better.”
Starbucks sure has proven it has a few tricks up its sleeve, with the recent roll-out of color-changing drinks and other unprecedented technicolor beverages. I, for one, am under no illusion that the two Starbucks’ “big-wizards,” Shultz and Johnson, will conjure up some truly magical (and delicious) candy-colored offerings.Starbucks Mexico, Starbucks' New Mermaid Frappuccino
