For “Rick and Morty” fans, this past year has been a very exciting one — all because of the infamous Szechuan sauce mentioned in the first episode of the newest season of the Adult Swim TV show.

For instance, legendary DJ Deadmau5 purchased a 64-ounce jug of McDonald’s Szechuan sauce for $15,000, according to Foodbeast.

The hype for this sauce is very real. And the creators of “Rick and Morty” finally got to try it (video below).

The two-and-a-half-minute video shows Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland and the creative team one-by-one taking bites of McDonald’s chicken nuggets, dipping them into the highly coveted Szechuan sauce with reactions ranging from “Not bad” to “I like it” and “It tastes like sugary General Tso’s.”

So there you have it! At $235 per ounce, you would think the Szechuan sauce would bring forth more emphatic reactions, but the hype surrounding the sauce has more to do with its story than the actual sauce itself.

For those out of the loop, “Rick and Morty” follows the intergalactic misadventures of alcoholic scientist Rick and his reluctant and nervous grandson, Morty. The first episode of its newest season aired a few months ago, leaving everyone with one joke still hanging in the air, even now: the Szechuan sauce joke. The episode explains Rick’s obsession for McDonald’s Szechuan sauce, which was a limited edition treat as part of a marketing gimmick for Disney’s 1998 movie “Mulan.”

After the episode aired, fans flocked to Twitter to reach out to the chef at McDonald’s to bring back the coveted sauce.

And then what started as a joke became a reality. After the official premiere of the third season of “Rick and Morty,” McDonald’s announced on its Twitter account that there would be a giveaway of the sauce in question. Lo and behold, the company sent Justin Roiland, the creator of “Rick and Morty,” a 64-ounce jug of the special Szechuan sauce.
