Various Burger King restaurants were the victims of odd prank calls that resulted in tens of thousands of dollars of damages (see video below)

According to Grub Street, Burger King restaurants in Oklahoma, Minnesota, and California received prank calls claiming that the building would explode unless employees smashed the windows.

In Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Burger King employees received a phone call from someone who said he was from the local fire department, as reported by WTVC. The caller said the employees needed to relieve the pressure of the restaurant by breaking the windows.

“Officers arrived and found that the manager and employees of the Burger King were smashing out the windows,” said Sgt. Rick Boone. “The manager explained they’d received a phone call from a male who identified himself as a fireman who said there were dangerous levels of gas in the building and they had to break out all the windows to keep the building from blowing up.”

“It is a little upsetting that they would try to give the fire department a black eye,” said Thomas Larman, with the Shawnee Fire Department. “We would never do anything like that. We’re here to serve the public, protect the public.”

Employees said the situation was very strange indeed, but they merely followed the manager’s orders after receiving the phone call.

“I guess I was a little scared,” said Burger King employee Ethan Grewe. “My other coworkers were doing it.”

Other fast-food restaurants have experienced similar pranks, such as Jack in the Box restaurants in Tucson, Arizona, and a Wendy’s in Phoenix. At a Burger King in Morro Bay California, in addition to employees breaking the windows, a manager also crashed his car into the restaurant.
