Our Nation’s Bacon Supply Is Super Low Right Now

All good things must come to an end, fam — especially if we don’t practice moderation.
We always knew there would eventually be a consequence for the insane bacon-mania that has swept our nation for the past handful of years, and it is finally upon us.
According to USA Today, the U.S.’s bacon reserves are actually at the lowest levels they have reached in half a gosh dang century.
Surely this is a result of our insane appetites and demands for the salty snack?
The Ohio Pork Council (yes … there is actually a council for pork) reported on Jan. 31, 2017, that people are demanding pork belly, and they’re demanding it way too much; pig farmers simply cannot keep up.
You know what happens when we all demand and demand and demand and there’s not enough to go around? Prices go up.
The council reports that pork belly prices have incurred an increase of around 20 percent in January 2017, and also suggest that increased foreign demand for that slice of pig might be partially responsible for the decline in inventory in the U.S.
In December 2016, that inventory totaled around 17.8 million pounds (which, if you think about it, is actually a huge amount of pig) — and that was still the lowest level since 1957, reports USA Today.
“Today’s pig farmers are setting historic records by producing more pigs than ever,” Rich Deaton, president of the Ohio Pork Council, told USA Today. “Yet our reserves are still depleting.”
However, he urges pig-fanatics not to panic.
“While bacon may become more expensive for consumers, rest assured [the ] pork industry will not run out of supply.”
Perhaps this is a sign, bacon fanatics! Maybe we should all just give our animals and planet a well-deserved rest, and try going vegan.
