After a pregnant Brazilian woman awoke from a caesarian section, the woman’s husband accused the hospital of stealing the baby from his wife’s womb.
30-year-old Claudia Aparecida Lopes is the second victim of a baby-snatching scheme in the South American country. Her husband, Alexandro Donizete Alves, 23, reported the incident to police and is determined to find out why their baby was stolen from them.
“My wife did a pregnancy test at the chemist and it was positive,” Alves said. “So we made a doctor’s appointment, and he confirmed the pregnancy, even telling us it was a boy. We paid for pre-natal treatment and even went for ultrasound scans. During one of the two scans the doctor told us the birth couldn’t be natural because the child was sitting down, and it needed to be a caesarean.”
Lopes was given prenatal vitamins, changed her diet and took every health provision for pregnant women. Then, when Lopes’ had the operation, she woke up with a huge scar on her stomach and a bizarre explanation, according to Daily Mail.
“My wife had a huge cut across her belly and they simply told us that there wasn’t a baby after all, it was all psychological. That’s when I called the police and registered the occurrence,” he said. “If the pregnancy was psychological, how come he accompanied the whole pregnancy. If it’s true, then I must have psychological problems too, because I saw the child on the ultrasound and so did he.”
The couple knew something was amiss when the doctor claimed the woman’s pregnancy was “imaginary” after seeing undisputable evidence that the baby was real. The Medical Council of Minas Gerais (CRM-MG) and the civil police investigated the event, according to San Francisco Globe.
“We’re going to hear witnesses and examine all the documents,” Brazilian Civil Police Chief Claudia Franchi said. “The inquiry will be concluded in 30 days, but it is too early to draw any conclusions.”
Alexandre Rodrigues of the CRM-MG also spoke on his organization’s coming investigation:
“At the moment I don’t know who falsified what. We don’t yet know why a caesarian was carried out and everything has to be investigated. We could we dealing with a psychiatrically-disturbed patient. The investigation is to find out exactly where and in what moment the error occurred. We will examine the two ultrasound scans presented by the patient and find out if the doctor carried out the caesarian just on the basis of seeing the scans. We have the testimonies of both parties and they will be investigated.”
This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. A number of other “phantom” pregnancies have been reported in Brazil. In December 2013, 19-year-old Layane Santos claimed a hospital in Sao Paulo stole her baby after a caesarean.Tags: Brazil
