Chanetrice Carter, a server at a Virginia IHOP, says she was fired after receiving a $200 tip.
“I said, ‘my goodness, I just got a $200 tip,'” said Carter. “This is amazing. This is crazy.”
IHOP claimed the large tip was a mistake and refunded the customer’s money. Carter was allegedly told to pay the money back or lose her job.
“A part of me was upset,” said Carter. “A part of me was mad.”
In a closed door meeting with management Carter was given the ultimatum, according to Yahoo News.
“He said, ‘that’s his handwriting. That’s his signature,'” said Carter. “But he only meant to write down $2.00. He didn’t mean to write down $200.00.”
“You have seven days to pay it back or else,” she says she was told by the manager.
Carter claims her refusal to repay the money led to her being fired.
“Nobody’s rights have been violated here,” said WWBT NBC 12 legal analyst Steve Benjamin. “There has been no unlawful termination. She didn’t have to return the money, but they can in turn fire her because she is just employed at will.”
During Carter’s interview with WWBT she received a call from the IHOP district manager.
“He basically said that he wants to sit down tomorrow,” said Carter. “And if they can correct anything they will correct it. I just look forward to sitting down with them and seeing what they have to say because nobody would talk to me until you all called.”
According to Carter, the first statement the district manager said to her during the meeting was, “How soon can you come back?!”
Carter is still considering whether or not to return to her position.Tags: IHOP
