Ah, Wisconsin: home of the squeaky cheese curds. How sad it is to learn that your greatest asset has caused so much strife.

A white, unmarked trailer carrying 20,000 pounds of cheese has reportedly been stolen from a parking lot in Wisconsin, reports WGBA.

According to Oak Creek Police Captain Mike Bolender, the cheese driver parked his truck near a storage area for semis, and left for several hours. The cheese, which was produced by manufacturer U.S. Foods, is estimated to be valued at more than $46,000, and was reported missing at around 2 a.m.

“He left the truck, ran a couple of errands, and when he came back, the truck was missing with its contents,” Bolender told WGBA. “It’s a unique case, and we’re working several leads right now.”

This particular load of cheese, which was en-route to the New York/New Jersey area from Green Bay when it was burglarized by the cheese pirates, is actually just one case in a series of cheese-related thefts. A trailer filled with $70,000 worth of cheese was stolen from a Germantown trucking company earlier in 2016, according to the Associated Press.

“If they keep taking the trucks, they’re going somewhere with it, but I’ve never heard of it,” Vince Christian of Wisconsin Cheese Mart said to WWLP.

“It’s kind of crazy cheese is such a valuable commodity at this point that people are just going off with entire trucks of it,” he added.

As of July 6, police were still actively searching for the missing cheese.
