Here’s A Weird Way To Get A Free Whopper (Photo)

They say there is no such thing as a free lunch. But at Burger King, lunch is on them. Specifically, to those who’ve been recently tanked by their last job. Is this a strange marketing ploy? An act of altruism? Both?
The marketing team fired up (ahem) a campaign to showcase Burger King’s flame-grilling technique and connected it to unemployment. The slogan, an overt play on “getting fired” and “fire grill,” psuedo-sympathizes with the fact that you, the receiver of a free whopper, just got fired.
In a statement in Business Wire, Fernando Machado, head of marketing at Burger King, said the slogan “is an idea that basically showcases the love people have for the Whopper sandwich. We know getting fired sucks, but getting a free Whopper doesn’t.”
It feels like the king of burgers might be suffering a case of misplaced sensibilities. It is a stretch to associate getting fired from a job to Burger King’s fire-grilled burgers. What do you guys think?
Well, if you are interested in getting a free lunch, the first step is to get yourself fired. Then, fall in line with other Whopper applicants, who must publicly post, nay, confess the following message on LinkedIn: “I got fired. I want a free Whopper. #WhopperSeverance.”
If you are among the first 100 entrants to post this, you’ll also receive a 30-minute coaching session with a professional career consultant.
Delish reports that the campaign is pretty light-hearted and that unsurprisingly, people have followed suit by posting fires (from years ago). And sure enough, the King still replied with a link to register a “severance package,” which will result in a free Whopper in the form of a gift card.
So, a free lunch does exist, at one teeny tiny expense. “Own your fire!” says the press release on Business Wire. Put it out there, you know. Show the world (and your colleagues) that just because you got fired, it does not shut you out to other opportunities!
