Singer Demi Lovato has been the talk of the Billboard Music Awards after she wore a shirt on stage showing her support for the transgender community.
Lovato’s shirt, which shows a modified bathroom symbol, was worn in protest of North Carolina’s anti-LGBT legislation, House Bill 2, the Huffington Post reports. The bill, which was signed into law by Gov. Pat McCrory on March 23, states that transgender people must use the bathroom corresponding with the gender they were assigned at birth rather than their chosen gender identity.
Lovato will be selling a replica of the shirt during her Honda Civic tour: Future Now, with Nick Jonas. Proceeds from the shirt sales will be donated to North Carolina LGBT organizations, according to an announcement from GLAAD.
“Demi Lovato continues to be a fearless ally for LGBT equality and acceptance,” GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement following Lovato’s performance on May 22, according to the Huffington Post.
“By wearing her support for the transgender community, Lovato is raising critical visibility for vulnerable LGBT North Carolinians and sending an invaluable message of support to transgender people everywhere.”
Lovato and Jonas also canceled their shows in North Carolina in protest of the bathroom law.Tags: Demi Lovato
