An estimated 40,000 pounds of ground turkey were recalled on Oct. 2 after Prestage Foods Inc. officials discovered “extraneous materials” found in one of its packages.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall in a press release, declaring specific ground turkey meat products as unsafe.

The press release reports the ground turkey was produced on Sept. 25 and 26, and sold at supermarkets in nine states: Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Tennessee.

The problem was reported on Sept. 27 when a plant employee performing sanitation on processing equipment “noticed metal shaving in a package of ground turkey from the recalling firm and notified the company,” the press release stated.

The USDA encourages customers to discard or throw away the following products subject to the recall:

  • 1.3-pound white Styrofoam trays with clear plastic film covering packages containing ground turkey labeled “Publix ground turkey breast WITH NATURAL FLAVORINGS” with ink jet printing on the side of trays displaying the first four digits of 7268 and 7269.

  • 1.3-pound white Styrofoam trays with clear plastic film covering packages containing ground turkey labeled “Publix ground turkey WITH NATURAL FLAVORINGS” with ink jet labeling on the side of trays displaying the first four digits of 7268 and 7269.

  • 1.2-pound white Styrofoam trays with clear plastic film covering packages containing ground turkey labeled “Fit & Active Fresh Ground Turkey With Natural Flavoring” with ink jet labeling on the side of trays displaying the first four digits of 7268 and 7269.

  • 1.0-pound white Styrofoam trays with clear plastic film covering packages containing ground turkey labeled “Weis Markets Fresh Ground Turkey Breast” with ink jet labeling on the side of trays displaying the first four digits of 7268 and 7269.

The recalled items are labeled with the establishment number P-22000, so if you live in one of the affected states and recently purchased Publix, Fit & Active or Weis Markets ground turkey, check the packaging for this number before consuming.

The USDA classified this recall as Class II, a hazardous situation in which there is remote probability of adverse health issues from using the product.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products, according to the USDA.
