Back in October 2017, McDonald’s announced its relaunch of its sorely missed Dollar Menu after it was killed in 2013. Despite the chain’s McPick 2 option, value-minded customers starting seeking cheaper menu offerings at the fast-food restaurant’s competitors, including Taco Bell and Dunkin’ Donuts. But, McDonald’s returning value menu in 2018 will put the chain back in the running, once again giving the competition a run for their money.

Starting January 4, McDonald’s is rolling out a Dollar Menu 2.0 featuring menu items at $1, $2, and, $3 price points aimed at re-attracting its customer base. Here is what you can expect at each tier, pictured below.

$1 menu items will include a Sausage Burrito, McChicken, Cheeseburger, and any size soft drink. Sausage McGriddles, 2-piece Buttermilk Crispy Tenders, Bacon McDouble, and a small McCafe beverage (excluding coffee or iced coffee) are priced at $2. The $3 menu offers a Sausage McMuffin with Egg, New Classic Chicken Sandwich, Triple Cheeseburger, and a Happy Meal.

McDonald USA’s president, Chris Kempczinski stated the new menu was built with value and variety in mind and plans to circulate or “pulse” deals in and out of the value menu throughout the year as an effort to squeeze to the front of the line in the fast-food competition whose race is essentially to the bottom. The restaurant with the cheapest menu item will usually win the most customers. As one Bloomberg intelligence analyst reported, the fast food giant is trying to “lock in those gains.” But, the golden arched-giant faces stiff competition.

he McPick 2 menu remains alongside the new Dollar Menu items for now. Soon after McDonald’s announcement, Taco Bell followed up with its own $1 Menu news — an additional 20 new items to the existing value menu — in effect throughout 2018. Fox News reports the first on the chain’s first value menu item, the Stacker, a layered tortilla with ground beef, shredded cheese, nacho cheese sauce, available beginning December 2017.
