There’s been a class-action lawsuit against some of this country’s biggest dairy farmers, and residents who have purchased any dairy products from any of the 15 states affected will get to take part.

Detroit Free Press reports that citizens of the following 15 states and the District of Columbia will be able to submit claims on this class-action lawsuit if they’ve bought any dairy products from grocery stores since 2003.

Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin

According to Oregon’s KTVZ-TV, the lawsuit was originally filed in 2011 against big names in the industry including Land O’Lakes, National Milk Producers Federation, Dairy Farmers of America Inc., Dairylea Cooperative Inc. and Agri-Mark Inc.

So, what did they do to offend so many? The class-action suit states that they “engaged in a nationwide conspiracy to limit the production of raw farm milk by prematurely slaughtering cows, illegally causing the price of milk and other fresh milk products to artificially inflate.”

Think that’s despicable? So does Compassion Over Killing, the organization who worked alongside Hagens Berman to bring this conspiracy to light. “Compassion Over Killing is proud to have spearheaded the research that led to this class action suit brought by Hagens Berman on behalf of millions of consumers harmed by the dairy industry,” said one spokesperson for Compassion Over Killing. “Not only was the price of milk artificially inflated, but this scheme ultimately also cost 500,000 young cows their lives.”

If this makes you angry (and it should), and you live in one of the above-mentioned places, don’t hesitate to go and make your claim. The amount of money you’d get back isn’t clear, but it’s estimated that it could be as high as $70. If you want to learn more about the details of the lawsuit, you can find the settlement agreement at www.boughtmilk.com. If you have questions about making a claim, you can call the Settlement Administrator at 1-800-417-4561, or by emailing info@boughtmilk.com. These dairy farmers played dirty. Make sure you get them back.
